A great end to 2024
Greetings, friends! Welcome back to my occasional newsletter, a space where I share the joy, stories, and images I've collected through my photographic adventures. I hope these glimpses into my journey bring a smile to your face and of course, this is also the chance to wish you all the warmest holiday wishes
Taylor Wessing Awards
The Taylor Wessing exhibition opened at the National Portrait Gallery with a spectacular event. The room buzzed with excitement, filled with people and artists from all around the world. It was a true joy to be part of such an inspiring occasion. The show is open till February 2025.
Portrait of Britain Award 2025
I’m also very pleased to share the news that 2 of my images are shortlisted for the #portraitofbritain award and they will be featured in the @bjp1854 POB Book vol. 7!
The caption of the images:
on the left: Allyson Williams MBE, shot for Migration Museum for a special project/exhibition that marks the 75 years of the NHS and celebrates the crucial role of its international workers. Today, around one in six people working in the NHS are non-British, and many others are the children and grandchildren of migrant healthcare workers.
on the right: Zubaydah Abdi shot for Guardian to illustrate how the pandemic affected young people. I met Zubaydah Abdi very early in the morning before she was due to go to work. A strong young woman who talks very openly about her generation's struggle during the pandemic. “The years between 16 and 18 are a blur to me: I feel as if I’m a 16-year-old stuck within a 19-year-old’s body without the experiences or skills to fulfill their responsibilities....”
Faces of Favell
In 2021 and again a few months ago, I was appointed as a photographer for two commissions in collaboration with the creative group “60 Miles by Road or Rail.” These projects were engaging, community-based initiatives that documented the stories of Northampton and Corby as they celebrated 50 years since their creation through intergenerational activities.
In both instances, my role as a photographer was part of a broader collaboration that included a videographer and contributions from oral history and theatre. The first project also featured the Northampton Museum, which hosted a photographic exhibition showcasing our work. The results were outstanding, with my images being featured by the BBC, The Guardian, and other media outlets.
The most recent project celebrated the 50th anniversary of Weston Favell Shopping Centre. For this, I spent several days capturing portraits of over 80 individuals I met around the area. These individuals bring life and character to the shopping centre, transforming it into a vibrant community hub rather than just a retail destination.
The outcome of this work is a large-scale, semi-permanent exhibition, funded by Arts Council England and Northampton Town Council, which is displayed within the shopping centre itself.
Thank you for joining me on this journey, I look forward to sharing more stories and images with you. I’m also very much looking forward to hearing your comments. Always open to new commissions, portrait sessions and brainstorming ideas
Until next time…Ciao ciao
Christian
